Now that I’ve finished college applications, I’m transitioning to searching and applying for scholarships. The more I search, the better I’ve become at finding them and the more I realize that there is an abundance of scholarships for which I qualify.
Now, is that good or bad?
Most teenagers would probably say that it’s absolutely wonderful to have so many doors of opportunity open. That may be true, but having a lot of scholarships to consider can be a double-edged sword.
On one side, it means that there are more opportunities to earn free money. On the other side, however, a student who applies for too many scholarships may not devote enough time to personalize each of the applications.
Once I figured out where to search, the number of scholarships for which I qualified seemed to quadruple. I was ecstatic about having so many opportunities to earn money, but I also began to feel overwhelmed.
Looking at what seemed to be an endless list of scholarships to apply for, I felt an urge to apply for all of them. I’ve never let an opportunity go to waste, so I figured that I wouldn’t let any of these applications go unfilled, either. I just hoped that, out of the many scholarships that I would apply for, I’d win at least a few of them.

May 14, 2010 -- The effects of early child care may be more long-lasting than commonly believed, according to a new study.
At age 15, teens who had high-quality child care in their early years performed better on academic and cognitive tests than did other teens, and they had fewer adolescent behavior problems, says study leader Deborah Lowe Vandell, PhD, professor and chair of education at the University of California, Irvine.
''We think a lot of people expect the effects of early child care would fade away by age 15," Vandell tells WebMD. "We found they didn't. Children who were in early high-quality child care did better academically and cognitively at age 15, compared to other children in the study."
Teens with a quality child care background also had fewer problem behaviors, such as breaking rules, hanging out with kids who get into trouble, and arguing, the researchers found.
The study is published in the journal Child Development.

Perhaps not surprisingly, money continues to play a dominant role in where high school seniors go to college, an annual survey finds, but it also shows that many don’t consider one factor that could significantly affect the final tab for their degree: the time it takes to graduate.
The survey of nearly 193,000 first-time, full-time freshmen at 283 four-year colleges and universities found that 83.4% expect to graduate in four years. Yet, at the schools they attend, just 40.6% graduate, on average, in four years. Federal data show that 38% of first-time, full-time freshmen who entered a four-year college in 2004 graduated within four years; just 58% graduated in six.
