Crafty and original Valentine's Day ideas. Fun projects for kids, nannies & parents alike!
Like the Upper West Side and Park Slope, the Upper East Side is one of those neighborhoods where you can barely go a block without passing some kind of kid-centric business or attraction...Despite its somewhat snooty reputation, the nabe has lots of fun (and often affordable!) activities for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teens. From unique play spaces to world-class art museums, lush landscaped parks to lovely independent toy stores, afternoon tea complete with fairy wings to a game of Skee-Ball in a barbecue joint, the Upper East Side has all that plus mansions, parades, public art, towering temples and churches, athletic complexes and some of the priciest real estate in town.
I used to think only the rich hired nannies. That stereotype dominates the media, from a recent New York Times Magazine column on high-priced nannies making more than I ever will in a year, to the new ABC Family reality show, Beverly Hills Nannies, set to debut July 11. Then I had a baby. I’m a freelance writer and editor. My husband is an organizer for a national nonprofit. We have a 4-month-old daughter and live in Brooklyn. We’re not exactly the 1 percent. Yet we have a nanny. Despite recent tales of “super nannies” who make more than their charge’s pediatrician, in many American cities, hiring a nanny costs less than day care enrollment, especially for families with atypical workweeks or multiple kids....
As the sun sets on a Saturday evening, downtown Manhattanites are just getting started on their plans for the evening — and so are their toddlers. Inside a hip TriBeCa playspace, a throng of pajama-clad youngsters is tearing around; one dives into a brightly colored ball pit, while another few race downstairs to jump on the trampoline. Some kids, clearly regulars, know each other already. One tearful new arrival is taken in by some friendly peers. Baby sitters attempt to keep up with their young charges. This is Project Playdate, where hip parents deposit their young ones while they head off for a few hours of kid-free fun on the weekend...
Picture this: your kids’ bookshelves filled with old-timers, new classics, and bedtime tales that are anything but a snooze. We picked our all-time favorite lit for littles.
We've already shared our picks for the best concerts and stage shows for families this winter. Now we turn our attention to the best kid-friendly exhibits coming your way. While three of the installations are at familiar tot spots—the American Museum of Natural History, the Children's Museum of the Arts and the New York Hall of Science—we've also scoped out cool kid-friendly exhibits at the Rubin Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Intrepid. And we've got an up-to-date list of free museum hours so you can figure out when to visit at no cost.

But if you'd like to celebrate with your children too, there are lots of ways to share the love this holiday. We've rounded up 14 Valentine's Day events for New York City kids

Private SAT tutors have been de rigueur at elite New York private schools for a generation, but the proliferation of subject-matter tutors for students angling for A’s is a newer phenomenon that is beginning to incite a backlash. Interviews with parents, students, teachers, administrators, tutors and consultants suggest that more than half of the students at the city’s top-tier schools hire tutors, an open secret that the schools seem unable to stop.
