As a parent, you want to leave your child in the best possible hands while you are out and about for date night or a shopping trip. However, babysitters are hard to find, and great babysitters are rare. There are obvious signs of a bad babysitter, but do you know if you have a good babysitter or a truly great babysitter? Look for the following signs that you have found a great babysitter.

Your Child Looks Forward to Their Arrival

If your child is excited for your babysitter to arrive, this is a great sign. It means that your child trusts them, and they have a lot of fun together. Many children don’t like to be separated from their parents, so making sure that you leave them with someone they like is important.

Your Child and House are Clean

This doesn’t necessarily mean that messy activities can’t happen, but if your babysitter decides to make homemade play-dough with your child, your kitchen should be clean.

If your child appears to still have food from dinner on their face when you get home, it means that your babysitter didn’t take the time to help them clean up.  A great babysitter makes sure your house and child are as tidy as you left them.

They Genuinely Like Your Child

Parents, you know when someone likes spending time with your child. You want your babysitter to genuinely like and care for your child. Both your child and babysitter will have a better experience if they enjoy spending time with one another.

They Ask a Lot of Questions

Does your babysitter ask you questions about your house rules or your child’s usual schedule? A great babysitter makes sure that they fully understand what you expect from them while you are gone.

They Have Special Certifications

If you are looking for a great babysitter, ask if they have any special certifications or experience. If you have a child with severe allergies, see if they have training on how to use an EpiPen.  A great babysitter probably has special certifications, such as first-aid training or CPR certifications.

They are Creative and Engaging

A great babysitter is going to plan and do fun, engaging and creative activities with your children. You don’t want a babysitter that considers watching movies for hours as fun and engaging. You want a babysitter that is going to be educational, active and silly with your kids.

They Give You a Report

At the end of the night, when you ask your babysitter the typical, “How did it go?” question, what is their response?  A great babysitter will give you a report about how the night went, bring up any issues or concerns and let you know how your kids behaved.

Your Child is Well-Rested and Happy the Next Day

If your child is well-rested the next day, it means that your babysitter followed your bedtime routine. If they are happy and talk about the fun that he or she had while the babysitter was there, you know you have found a winner.
